'What you see is what you get'... (or not?)

Kiwi snoepjes met echte kiwi mogen zo heten. Natuurlijk. Zelfs al zit er maar een minieme hoeveelheid van in. Want de consument leest het etiket op het zakje. Toegegeven, er moet wel échte aroma in zitten (95% of meer natuurlijk kiwi aroma). Maar wat als het kiwisnoepje kunstmatig kiwi aroma bevat? Dan hoort er geen kiwi op de verpakking te prijken. We zien dan hooguit een ‘kiwi look & feel’: veel groen, veel palmen en misschien zelfs wat zwarte pitjes.
Nogmaals kiwi: de televisie commercial voor Coolbest Raw Juice bevat beelden van Maori’s en kiwi’s met o.a. de tekst: ‘hier in Nieuw Zeeland hebben we de geweldige kiwi gevonden’. Een kijker vond dat misleidend, want de oorspronkelijke kiwi komt uit China en niet uit Nieuw Zeeland. Gelukkig vindt de Reclame Code Commissie dat de kijker begrijpt dat Coolbest Raw Juice van de mooiste en lekkerste kiwi’s uit Nieuw Zeeland gemaakt wordt.
Een plaatje van een kiwi zegt dus niet alles; zoekt en gij zult hopelijk de juiste informatie vinden, o.a. op het etiket. Maar het blijft een puzzelstukje: proef ik echt fruit, natuurlijk aroma of kunstmatige smaak- en geurstoffen?

Kiwi sweets with real kiwi in them can be called exactly that. Of course. Even when there is a minimum amount in them - because the consumer reads the label on the bag. Admittedly it must contain real flavouring (95% or more natural kiwi flavour) but what if the kiwi sweet contains artificial kiwi flavouring? Then kiwi should not feature on the packaging. What you then get is a “kiwi look & feel": a lot of green, a lot of palm trees and maybe even some black seeds.
More kiwi: the television commercial for Coolbest Raw Juice shows images of Maoris and kiwis with the text: “Here in New Zealand we've found this amazing kiwi". A viewer found this misleading because the original kiwi comes from China and not from New Zealand. Luckily the Advertising Code Committee found that the viewer understands that Coolbest Raw Juice is made from the best and tastiest kiwis grown in New Zealand.
A picture of a kiwi does not say it all; seek and thou shalt hopefully find the right information, on the label for example. It remains a puzzle however: do I taste real fruit, natural flavouring or artificial flavouring and aromas?
