Ballonnen zijn gevaarlijker dan je denkt!

[:nl]Nitrosaminen zijn stoffen die veel voorkomen in latex en rubber. Cumulatieve blootstelling aan deze stoffen is gevaarlijk omdat deze kankerverwekkend kunnen zijn. Veel ballonnen bevatten nitrosaminen terwijl dit vermijdbaar is. Al in 2006 bepaalde de Minister van Volksgezondheid in een beleidsregel dat ballonnen met nitrosaminen als een bijzonder gevaar moeten worden beschouwd.

Inmiddels heeft ook de Europese Commissie (EC) zich hierbij aangesloten. Zij heeft een regel opgenomen in de nieuwe Speelgoedrichtlijn (2009/48). De EC baseert zich op een advies van het Wetenschappelijk Comité voor Consumentenproducten (SCCP). De Europese regel is ruimer dan de beleidsregel uit 2006. Deze beleidsregel is daarom ook verscherpt. Vanaf 2013 geldt de regel in heel Europa.

Concreet: Het gehalte nitrosaminen in ballonnen mag dus niet te hoog zijn. Daarnaast moet op alle ballonverpakkingen in Nederland een passende, duidelijk leesbare en opvallende waarschuwingstekst worden opgenomen. Als passende tekst wordt beschouwd:

WAARSCHUWING! OM VEILIGHEIDSREDENEN NIET IN DE MOND NEMEN EN UITSLUITEND OPBLAZEN MET EEN BALLONNENPOMP.

Let dus op (zeker met alle WK festiviteiten in het verschiet): ballonnen zijn gevaarlijker dan je denkt!

A lot of balloons contain nitrosamines, while this is avoidable. Already in 2006, the Dutch Minister of Public Health determined in a policy rule that balloons containing nitrosamines should be considered dangerous. Meanwhile also the European Commission (EC) has concurred with the consideration of the Dutch Minister. In the new Safety of Toys Directive (2009/48) the EC adopted a specific rule. The EC based this rule on an advice from the Sientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP). The European rule is more broadly defined than the Dutch policy rule of 2006. The Dutch policy rule is therefore adjusted accordingly. As of 2013 the European rule is effective in Europe. In practice: the amount of nitrosamines in balloons may not be too high. Furthermore, all balloon packages on the Dutch market should include a proper, clearly readable and prominent warning text: WARNING! FOR SAFETY REASONS DO NOT TAKE INTO THE MOUTH AND SOLELY INFLATE WITH A BALLOONPUMP (in Dutch: Waarschuwing!
