Hollandse Nieuwe
Hoewel deze week de Nationale Haringpartij gewoon doorgaat, is de officiële start van het haringseizoen dit jaar uitgesteld. Het eerste vaatje zou op 5 juni geveild worden, maar deze happening is uitgesteld tot 19 juni. Volgens het Nederlands Visbureau is de haring die tot nu toe gevangen is nog niet van de juiste kwaliteit om tot Hollandse Nieuwe verwerkt te worden.
Toch kan het zijn dat je bij de viskraam op de hoek “Hollandse Nieuwe” op het bord ziet staan. Is dat dan geen misleidende reclame? Nee. Volgens het Warenwetbesluit Visserijproducten, slakken en kikkerbillen mag haring die gevangen is in de maanden mei tot en met september aangeduid worden met “nieuwe haring”, “Hollandse Nieuwe” of “nieuwe maatjes”. Dat de kwaliteit van de vangst in de praktijk achter loopt, maakt dus voor de wettelijke benaming niet uit. In deze maanden is die benaming gewoon toegestaan. Het advies: volg hier de actualiteit in plaats van de wet. Vreemde woorden van een advocaat. Maar wel praktisch als je net zoals ik van haring houdt.

The Famous Dutch Herring Hollandse Nieuwe
Although the Dutch National Herringparty is on for this week, the official start of the ‘herringseason’ this year is delayed. The first drum of herring should be put up for auction on the fifth of June, but this event was postponed until the 19th of June. The herring caught up till today, hasn’t got the right quality to be sold as ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’, according to the Dutch Fish Marketing Board.
However, it can occur that your local fish stall is already selling ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’. Is this misleading advertising? No, according to the Decree relative to fisheries products, snails and frog legs, herring caught in the months from May to September may be specified as ‘new herring’ or ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’. Though the quality of this year’s herring is not yet at his best, and doesn’t meet the standard quality of ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’, according to the law the herring may be sold as Hollandse Nieuwe in these months. Therefore the advice: listen to the current matters concerning the new herring, instead of following the law. These may be strange words coming from a lawyer, but it is a good advice when you are an enthusiast for herring, the same as I am.
